クリスマスの時期になると思い起す体験があります。それは、とても印象的で決して忘れることができない出来事でした。クリスマスにふさわしくないような出来事でありながら、クリスマスのメッセージを理解することを助けてくれるような出来事でした。

数年前のことですが、主として医療用医薬品卸売業を営む、ある会社の納品代行の仕事をしていたました。年末年始には病院への医薬品の配送がストップするため、クリスマス前後には、大きな病院では、約一週間分をまとめて納品することになります。

その日は、横浜市の二俣川にある県立がんセンターへの一括納品をすることになっていました。営業の担当者と待ち合わせをして、納品に伺うことになっていましたので、少し前に近くのコンビニに車を止めてトイレに行きました。

用を足して、水を流すためにレバーに手を伸ばしたところ、シャツの胸ポケットに入れていた携帯電話が便器にポトンと落ちてしまいました。 あっ！

予想外の水没事故にも驚きましたが、勢いよく流れる水流に、押し流されてゆく携帯電話の姿が消え去ってゆくことに、さらに驚きました。

ないのです。落としたはずの携帯が。

自分個人の携帯ならば、もうあきらめたでしょう。しかし、その時落とした携帯電話は、会社から支給されていた会社名義の電話でした。何が何でも持ち帰らなければなりません。

意を決して、手を入れ、流れていった携帯を手探りで探し当てようとしました。

絶対、手を入れたくないようなところに、それでも、ぐっと手を差し込み、探します。

残念ながら、手が届く範囲には、痕跡はありません。手が届かないパイプの奥のほうへと流されてしまったようです。

失意のうちに、トイレを出ると、レジに立っている店員さんに事情を説明して、大きな精神的ダメージを抱えたまま、納品へと赴きました。

翌日、コンビニの店長さんから電話があり、失われた携帯電話は、専門の業者の手によって真っ暗で希望の一つもないような状況から助け出され、回収された連絡がありました。

自分の車で二俣川まで向かい、そして、回収のためにかかった費用を支払い、回収された携帯電話を受け取ることができました。

この出来事をお話したのには訳があります。

第一に、あなたは神のものです。自分の携帯電話だったらあきらめと申し上げました。しかし、それは会社名義の電話だったと。あなたもまた神さまのものです。自分の人生を自分のものと考えているかもしれません。自分で自分をこの世界に存在させている人は誰もいません。神があなたを造り、神があなたをこの世界に存在させています。あなたも、私も神のものです。

第二に、神から離れた人間の悲しい状況です。ポケットから落ちて流れていった携帯電話は、失われた存在となりました。別の電話で電話しても「おかけになった番号は現在電源が入っていないか、電波が届かない場所にあります。」と通話ができませんでした。つながらない、失われた存在。神を認めない、神から離れた生き方こそ、闇の中を、死の陰の中を生きる姿です。

第三に、人間にはその状況を変えることはできません。携帯が自分で、そこから這い出して来ることはあり得ませんでした。また、私が手を入れても取り出せるような状況ではありませんでした。私のために、そこから失われた携帯を見つけ出し、取り戻す存在を必要としました。人間が自分で神のもとへ帰ることはできません。私たちもまた、私たちを救い出す存在を必要としています。

第四に、神がその救いを与えました。決して手を入れることなど考えたくもないところに手を入れて探りました。神は罪から目を背けられます。しかし、その罪の問題から人間を救い出すために、罪のあふれる世界に手を差し伸べます。もちろん、私は手を入れても携帯を見出すことはできませんでした。しかし、そこに専門家が専門のツールを用いて、遠く深くまで流されていた携帯を引き出してくれました。人間にはできないことを神ご自身が、成し遂げてくださったのです。神は失われた存在を愛し、熱心に求められます。離れたままにしておくことも、あきらめることもできないのです。

第五に私たちは神の手に再び握りしめられ生かされます。携帯は帰ってきました。取り戻されました。そして、洗って、消毒して、乾かして、電源を入れると、問題なく使うことができました。しかし、そこには犠牲が伴いしました。業者が作業した代金が請求されました。正直に言って手痛い出費でした。

私たちが神のもとに取り戻されるためにも代価が支払われました。それは人間に支払いを求めることなく神ご自身が、イエスご自身が支払われました。私たちには支払いきれない代価をイエスがご自身のいのちで支払われた。それがイエスの十字架です。神から離れた人間をもう一度神の手に取り戻すために支払われた罪の代価こそ、イエス・キリストの十字架の死であり、イエスご自身のいのちでした。こうして私たちは無償で神のもとに帰ることができるようになったのです。

クリスマスのメッセージは、神から離れて闇の中を歩む人間に、救いと解放をもたらすために来られた神の御子の到来を告げ知らせます。

イエスが来られたのは、すべての人に救いをもたらす神の恵みを、私たちが自分のものとすることができるようにするためでした。あなたも救いを受け取ることができます。闇から光に変えられることができます。これがクリスマスのメッセージです。

I have an experience to recall during the Christmas season.  It was a very striking event that I could never forget. It was the kind of event that would later help me to understand Christmas messages, even though it was not appropriate for Christmas.

A few years ago, I was delivering supplies for a wholesale pharmaceutical company.  As the delivery of medicine to the hospital is halted during New Year holidays, about one week’s worth of supplies  are usually delivered to big hospitals around Christmas.

On this particular day, I was scheduled to make a delivery to the prefectural cancer center in Yokohama City.  I was supposed to meet with a sales representative first, and then make the delivery together. Before that, I stopped by a convenience store near the hospital, and went to the restroom.

After relieving myself, I reached out to the lever to flush the toilet, and my mobile phone fell out of my shirt pocket and into the toilet bowl.  Oh no!

I was surprised that my phone dropped, but I was even more surprised that it disappeared into the vigorously flowing water current.

The mobile phone I had dropped was nowhere to be seen.

I would have already given up if it had been my personal phone.  However, it was a company phone and I really had to retrieve it.

I was determined, so I put my hand into the toilet bowl and tried to find the phone.

I put my hand even deeper to search, which most people would refuse to do.

Unfortunately, there was no object in the reach of my hand.  It seemed to have been flushed to the back of the pipe where my hand couldn’t reach.

With disappointment, I left the restroom and explained what had happened to a shop clerk.  I left the convenience store and went to the delivery incredibly concerned.

The next day, the convenience store manager called me.  He said that the phone was saved! It was pulled from the hopeless situation where it sat, from the pitch dark,, and retrieved by a specialist.

I headed out to the convenience store in my own car, paid for the cost of the specialist  and received the retrieved phone.

You may wonder why I am sharing this particular story.  Let me assure you, there’s a good reason.

First of all, you belong to God.  I told you that I would have given up if it had been my private phone.  But it was a company-owned phone. You belong to God. You may think you own your life.  No one has made himself present in this world by himself. God created you, and God has made you present in this world.  You and I belong to God.

Secondly, it is a sad situation of a person departed from God.  The mobile phone that dropped out of my pocket and was flushed away became a lost entity.  Even if I called on a different phone, I could not reach it and got an automated message, saying, “The number you have dialed is not available.”  It is a disconnected, lost entity. The way of life that does not admit God and lives away from Him is the way of living in the shadow of death —  in the deep darkness.

Third, humans cannot change that situation.  It was impossible for my mobile phone to crawl from there on its own. Also, I could not retrieve it, even by putting my hand in there. I needed someone who could find the lost phone and retrieve it from there for me. It is impossible for humans to return to God by themselves. We also need someone to rescue us.

Fourth, God gave His salvation.  I put my hand in a place I never, ever thought I would consider, putting it and searched. God turns his eyes away from sin. But He reached his hands out to the world full of sin to rescue humans from the problems of our sins. Like I said before, I could not find that phone, even if I put my hand in there.  However, an expert used special tools to bring out the phone from far and deep in the pipe. God himself has done what humans cannot do. God loves the lost beings and is eagerly seeking. He neither leaves nor gives up.

Fifth, God reaches down to us in our darkness and pulls us back to life again in Him through the work of His hands only.  The phone came back. It was retrieved. After washing, disinfecting, drying, and turning on the power, I was able to use it without problem.  But there was sacrifice involved. The contractor fee was charged. To be honest, it was a painful expense.

A price was paid for us to get back to God.  God himself, Jesus himself, paid it; He did not ask us to pay it.  With His life, Jesus paid the price we could not pay with our own lives.  . That is Jesus’s cross. Jesus Christ’s death on the cross is the price of sin paid to bring back people who were away from God to His hands once again.  In this way, we were able to return to God for free.

The Christmas message announces the arrival of the Son of God who came to bring salvation and liberation to the man who walks in the deep darkness, away from God.

Jesus came so that we could make ourselves the grace of God that brings salvation to all people.  You can receive salvation, too. You can change from darkness to light. This is my Christmas message.
